22-year-old Nantiere wins

A 22-year-old student from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region won the main Kwahu Easter marathon race held last Saturday.

The 40-km race which attracted 97 contestants started from Nkawkaw to Abene, the traditional capital of the Kwahus.

The winner Vikuba Mathew Nantiere clocked a time of 1:57:13.

Nantiere received assorted items from GOIL, a decoder and a satellite dish from StarTimes.

Ishmael Arthur came 2nd with a time of 1:59:49 whilst the 3rd position went to William Amponsah who made it with a time of 2:03:17.

The 4th place went to Jonas Ayamga with Seidu Salifu taking the 5th position.

The first female to cross the finishing line was Precious Nyaaba and 11-year old David Mayi who placed 9th and were given special prizes.

Addressing the marathoners after the race, the paramount chief of the Kwahu traditional area Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II commended the winner for his hard work which enabled him to win the race.

He hoped that the race would become bigger in the near future as compared to others in other countries.

The chairman of the organising committee of the marathon Nana Effah Opinamang III commended GOIL for sponsoring the event.

He was of the view that more talents must be unearthed for the development of athletics in the country.
