February 17, 2019 | Myka | General News

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mr Isaac Asiamah has implored tertiary institutions to introduce sports courses such as athletics training, physical education and sports medicine in their school curricula.

He said it was equally important for them to invest in sports business as a way of attracting the youth to nurture and develop their careers in sports.

In a speech read on his behalf by the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Professor Peter Twumasi during the inaugural ceremony of the Ghana Technical University Sports Association (GHATUSA) games, Mr Asiamah said the government was committed to using tertiary institutions as the hob to develop various sports disciplines in Ghana.

Speaking on the theme, ‘Harnessing a meaningful role to promote sports through education’,Mr Asiamah said tertiary institutions had a big role to play in organising sports through educational policies.

For his part, the Director-General of the NSA, Professor Twumasi pledged the sports authority’s support for the development of sports in tertiary institutions and called on stakeholders to use sports as a tool for national growth and development.

About 300 athletes from the 10 technical universities in Ghana will compete for honours during the GHATUSA games. The disciplines included men and women athletics, basketball, badminton, football, handball, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis and volleyball.

An opening football match between the Accra Technical University and the Kumasi Technical University ended in a one all drawn game at the Accra Sports stadium.
